Lessons learnt from Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me by Mindy Kaling

November is normally that time especially if you're at school, college, university, working .. when you're just frazzled. You want to live in your pyjamas, watch TV and eat biscuits all. day. long. Well that's what I wanted to do anyway. I was completely run down, the reading slump struggle was real.
I thought I'd try something new and get an audiobook. Something that wouldn't require any effort on my part. So I picked up Mindy Kaling's first book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (and other concerns) :

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

The Mindy Project is  that feel good comedy series and I never want it to end. Mindy is of course, the best thing about the show. I have to say I think I enjoyed this book SO much more because I listened to it. I thought I'd enjoy it but there are so many other dimensions of this book that together, just completely surpassed my expectations.  Her voice firstly, is super friendly. If you, like me, have a celebrity friend in your head, the audio book experience is for you. I definitely felt like she was in the room talking to me.

a. It's Mindy, like I said it's really funny.
b. So interesting to find out how she got to where she is now.
c. It had OODLES of pearls of wisdom without ever being preachy.

I think a lot of people reach that point in their lives when you start to realise what you want to do, and achieve in life. And it's just that awkward limbo when you don't really know how you're going to get there but at the same time you feel like you need to act fast?

And so this book honestly could not have come at a better time. If you know anything about Mindy, you'll know she's a screenwriter, actress, comedian, director, producer - just generally incredibly talented and awesome (spot the Mindy Kaling fan) . Someone with so many talents didn't have to 'choose' one and is now making a living doing things she's passionate about. What makes this book, feel like such a massive hug is that it is so comforting and reassuring to see that there isn't really manual to life and sometimes it's just a case of following your own groove.

It's the start of 2016 and everyone is about fresh starts and self improvement! I'm about to start reading her next book Why Not Me, and if it's anything like her first - I'm looking forward to being refreshed, renewed, challenged and laughing my way throughout.
